Construction of Chandamale Full Primary School
Brief History
Rumphi District center had two government primary schools where a large number of pupils were schooling above average school capacities per class. A seasonal stream runs down from the north which without a strong holding bridge is impassable for pupils located in the West communities to cross to St Denis Primary School located at the center. Following an incident at Bumba primary school located along the Rumphi tarmac road where a pupil was hit by a car while closing to school from the communities along Matunkha hill to the west of Rumphi Boma, parents and concerned authorities mobilized to address the issues once and for all. The area is the first most densely populated in Rumphi central thus parents resolved to seek help to construct a junior primary school for very young pupils to carter for standards 1 to 4. When the community approached DAMRA, we appreciated the magnitude of the problem at hand and sat down to develop proposals to find funding for the Construction of the school. With assistance of a German volunteer, we were able to get funding from Heart for Children, a German based NGO.
DAMRA held meetings with the School management Committee, The District education Manager, Village Development Committees (VDC), The District Council, and 8 group village headmen for the area to decide on the best way to implement the project. Standards were rated and DAMRA made the final decision to have a full primary school despite the tight budget we had at our hands.
Volunteers within the community were identified to teach at the school. It was agreed to ensure acceptable standards are observed to make the whole initiative a success. The Government of Malawi has assisted in finding teachers and academic resources for the school.
Sustainability
Construction was initiated soon after the funds were received. The Village Development Committee is responsible for overlooking all development initiative in the area collaborating with the local government and Civil Society Organizations. This committee together with other project beneficiaries determines the state of the school seek support when the problem in question cannot be resolved by the community.
The community is always ready to assist in enhancing the quality of services of the school where their children go to.
