About us
Goal:
To see thriving, self reliant families and communities in the most marginalized rural areas of Rumphi district.
DAMRA aims to motivate these communities in order for them to address the serious issues of:
- food insecurity,
- low household level income,
- environmental degradation
- and the devastating effects of the HIV and Aids pandemic.
Further Mission:
DAMRA exists in order to motivate, empower and build the capacity of the marginalized rural areas in Rumphi and adjacent districts. This is achieved through participatory approaches and networking with government extension officers, beneficiaries and stakeholders. DAMRA takes cognizance of the crucial role men, women and the youth play in development as it is now reflected in the new paradigm shift that is more client-focused and community driven. This is particularly manifest by the local credibility and community trust we enjoy because of participatory approaches and gender sensitive nature of development interventions.
Background
DAMRA is a non-governmental organization operating in some of the most marginalized areas within the Rumphi district, northern Malawi. The organization was formed in March 2004 by members of the former GTZ Border Zone Development Project (BZDP). Research in the marginal areas highlighted that these communities suffered from a severe lack of development initiatives. Therefore, DAMRA wishes to continue working in the region following on from the good work initiated by the BZDP. By establishing DAMRA the members believe the rural communities can be empowered through sustainable development initiatives with support from DAMRA staff. In order to create a sense of ownership and ensure project sustainability, all DAMRA programs in all impact areas are conducted in a participatory manner.
Vision
AMRA is inspired by the vision of hunger free communities in the most marginalized areas of Rumphi district. DAMRA envisions healthy, well fed communities motivated and empowered to improve their living standards through their own sustainable development initiatives.
