Institution Run Income Generating Scheme
Summary:
This project was initiated to carter for DAMRA administration costs and raise funds and resources for other small projects in the marginalized areas of Rumphi. To ensure that the practice is performed up to acceptable standards, trainings were conducted on caring for Poultry in 2007 the initial initiative with support from EGP which catered for infrastructure and investment capital and in 2009 a piggery was initiated with support from VSO Malawi. Documents were produced to serve as guidelines for the practice.
Goal
To cover all facility bills, parts of administration costs and raise funds for small projects.
Indicator
Facility bills covered, part of administration costs covered and some small projects funded.
Brief History
DAMRA was in its third year in operation back in 2007 when it partnered with EGP to implement an institutional income generating scheme. Permanent structures were constructed and management turned one of the structures to be its current office while maintaining the practice of raising and selling chickens. The performance has been commendable that a number of parallel initiatives from within Rumphi have visited the site to learn how to successfully implement their own. Some rural initiatives have also received support and training from the proceeds of this initiative to start their own for free.
In 2009, DAMRA partnered with VSO Malawi to further the institutional income generating scheme. A pen for pigs was constructed and piglets were procured. Trainings were conducted on pig farming best practices and documents were produced to be reference material for training new institutional stuff and other rural projects.
Initial situation
DAMRA had no permanent offices and were not able to efficiently pay all facility bills like water, rent, electricity and security.
Sustainability
DAMRA keeps a separate account for this project. This is so to efficiently track the project performance. Some funds are saved in this account to carter for unforeseen loss.
The permanent structures are maintained with funds generated from this initiative.
Parallel initiatives with intent to implement their own but lacking in some skills are welcome to visit DAMRA premises and learn from our skills and knowledge and share us their own.
